Round 19: Richmond v Melboune – Debt not the only thing the Dees demolish

Posted by Michael Allan on 12th August 2010

by Michael Allan

Another week, another opponent, unfortunately for Richmond another Victorian opponent. Richmond have only beaten interstate teams this year but as I head off to the ‘G’ I feel that the drought will break.

Today I’m particularly looking forward to the much anticipated match-up: Riewoldt v Frawley. Both emerging stars have had fantastic seasons so it should be a great contest. Read the rest of this entry »

Gusty Tiger win makes four in a row

Posted by Michael Allan on 11th July 2010

It wasn’t too long ago when football “experts” were seriously questioning whether Richmond would win a game all season. Others were calling out for Richmond to recieve special assistance from the AFL. Four wins later and that’s all forgotten.

The improvement has been extroadinary. First year recruits have shown good signs while players previously labelled list cloggers like Matt White and Shane Edwards have improved considerably. Read the rest of this entry »

Round 10: Port Adelaide v Richmond – Tigers wanted win more than Power

Posted by Michael Allan on 4th June 2010

As a casual worker at K-Mart I’mm only given one shift aweek. One shift. I’m available any time outside school hours except for one time. When Richmond plays. When I took up my port time job I was sure these two commitments would never clash. I was wrong.

3:00-6:30, I won’t even get to see the first quarter. This is worse than when I missed out on the Geelong game, Richmond are a slight chance today. Hopefully I’ll be able to go a whole day without any score updates and watch the game as if it were live.

To no surprise I manage to last the shift without any news. I hardly expected Port Adelaide and Richmond to be the discussion of my customers.

I’ve learnt from my Geelong blunder, as soon as I get in the car I turn the radio off, a media blackout is the only way this can work. Dad and I sit in silence for most of the trip as I stop him from saying one thing about the game.

My first panic attack comes when I go to the T.V. Mum is inconsiderately watching Before the Game, I rush to the remote and change channel. I don’t even bother gettng changed out of work clothes, I fast forward the pre game and get stuck into the match.

The conditions are attrocious which suits Richmond greatly. Our skill defficency wont be a factor, the game will come down to who wants it more.

One minute in and there’s a flat ball on the field. Nahas is given a gift when handed a fresh new ball but shanks the kick anyway. We’re going to have to take those oppurtunities if we’re to win.

Richmond look very good in the first quarter. They want it more than Power and their getting the reward for effort. Riewoldt kicks the Tiger’s first while Nahas soccers the second. Two goals in more like five in these terrible terrible conditions.

Luke Mcguane shows how much Richmond want a win by jumping into a contest leaving Moore grounded and Ebert on a stretcher only moments after having his leg (and maybe something much more precious) compramised by the goal post.

In the second term I’m delighted to see Ben Griffiths take a great specky, quite remarkable in these conditions, sadly later in the quarter he goes down injured to a corky and takes no further part in the match. But Griffiths injury is nothing compared to Power’s injury concerns, as Ebert still struggles to recover both Salopek and Hitchcock fall victim to shoulder problems.

Riewoldt continues his career best form with a FIFA World Cup inspired goal followed by a more conventional set shot. As Nason runs into an open goal at the end of the second term I fast forward the half time commercials thinking Richmond may actually win this match. A 29 point lead in this weather will be hard give up. But I’m sure Richmond will find a way.

The third quarter is disgraceful. The teams are just as bad as the weather, nobody wants to win. Richmond give Port every chance to get back into the game but the Power miss every time. Power only manage one goal six for the term, not enough to set themselves up for a comeback in the last term. Nason kicks a goal to end the quarter, cancelling out Powers dominance and Richmond look set for the win.

Going into the last all that is needed is one goal. One goal and the Tigers are home. The goal I’m looking for doesn’t come but Port aren’t scoring either. Finally, Martin has a set shot from forty meters out. As has been the case all day he fails to make the distance but Nahas has managed to take a mark in the goal square. He wheels around, kicks, and goals. That’s it. Richmond have secured their first win of the season. I’m out of my seat and celebrating, it may not be live but it feels like it to me.

As the siren sounds I acknoweldge that Dad wants to watch the Collingwood Brisbane match so I fast forward to the Richmond team song. As expected, the best song in the AFL is sung as it should be.

The circle of first time winners at the club is just as big as senior player circle. Martin, Nason, Farmer, Griffiths, Webberly, Asbury and Hardwick. That’s the future right there.

Round 9: Essendon v Richmond – Four quarters of football still too much to ask

Posted by Michael Allan on 27th May 2010

Last week, the Richmond faithful saw something they hadn’t seen all year. Their team played four good quarters of football. No, Richmond didn”t get the win but we could see potential for the future.

Going to this game that’s all we were hoping for. It’s not guaranteed but it is expected. The bar was set last week and now it needs to be maintained.

As for the pre game celebrations, the expectations are low. However tonight for once they’ve got it right. A pre game performance that actually depicts Aboriginal culture well. The spirtitaul puppets look very impressive. The presentation is short and sweet, the way it should be. Read the rest of this entry »

Round 6 – Geelong v Richmond: I know Richmond lose but I watch anyway

Posted by Michael Allan on 7th May 2010

by Michael Allan

This week the inevitable has happened. This is my first football season having an occupation and for the first time ever, Kmart has rostered me on during a Richmond match. 12:00-3:00, could not get a worse time, won’t get to catch the start of it and it will be over by the time I get home. Round 5: Fremantle v Richmond – Defeat’s not as bad from home

Posted by Michael Allan on 29th April 2010

It’s looking like another grim football season for the Allan household.

I decide this as my “other” side of the family watch their under performing Hawks remarkably lose to the predicted cellar dwellars North Melbourne.

I can’t help but think back to 2008, when the season ended with my Tigers, finishing just outside the eight, poised to enter september next season while the other side celebrated a premiership, favourites to retain their title the following year. How times have changed. Read the rest of this entry »

Round 4 – Richmond v Melbourne: Tigers go for youth, but pay the price

Posted by Michael Allan on 21st April 2010

by Michael Allan

At the start of the year I knew we wouldn’t win many games. I knew that every week would be a challenge and we’d see our fair share of thrashings. However I did think at then start of the year that we would go in favourites against our ladder next door neighbour Melbourne.

Three games in and I’ve already re-assessed how bad we are. To make matters worse, all players who could get a game in a team other than Richmond have found a reason to miss out on today’s clash. Foley’s still injured, Newman has some sort of hamstring tightness, Thursfield is still marked as injured for no apparent reason and we all know about Cousins, McGuane, Polo and Connors. And to top it all off Melbourne actually won last week! Read the rest of this entry »

AFL Round 2 – Richmond v Footscray: Bad Team, Bad Game, Bad Season

Posted by Michael Allan on 8th April 2010

by Michael Allan

One week down and Tigers season has already been written off, that’s got to be a record. After last week’s loss to Carlton I looked to see who we were playing next week only to find we were playing the team that many regarded as premiership favourites with a point to prove.

Knowing that a thrashing was immenent I went along with my mum and surprsingly Hawthorn supporting dad to witness the one sided game. With Cousins out the team looks even worse than last week; I didn’t know that was possible. Read the rest of this entry »

Round 1: Same old story for Tigers v Blues

Posted by Michael Allan on 31st March 2010

What a difference a year makes. 12 months ago I went to the opening match expecting a Richmond victory that would lead us to a finals berth with nothing but big things ahead. This year all I’m hoping is that Richmond are competitive.

The spiralling downfall that was ‘Richmond ‘09 has left me no hope for this season, quite frankly if any Richmond supporter does expect a big season, their out of their mind. Read the rest of this entry »

Boxing: It’s tough when you wait so long for something that’s over so quickly

Posted by Michael Allan on 4th December 2009

With footy season over, I do my best to substitute footy with other sports. With the big Green v Jones fight tonight, I think it might be worth checking it out.

I’ve never been a big boxing fan. My boxing knowledge spans only from Danny Green v Anthony Mundine to Rocky Balboa v Apollo Creed. But as this fight has been called “the biggest fight in Australian boxing history”, Dad, Dan and I head out to B. Kane’s house to watch the bout.

By the time we get to B. Kane’s house most of the undercard fights have finished. B Kane gives a quick rundown and it seems we haven’t missed much. We’re just in time for the undercard main event. Read the rest of this entry »
