I’ve lived in more than a dozen different suburbs on the south side of Melbourne and caught the train to the footy from all of them, but had never experienced a Geelong Hawthorn game travelling on the Glen Waverley line. It is like the reverse of Geelong station at midday on a Saturday with the Cats playing a day game at the ‘G.

Paul and I meet Dave and Heather, fresh from their engagement party the week before, just outside the Bunton Room. It’s about 80% full and we’ve got 10 minutes to fight our way through the crowd, get served, knock over a pot and then get a good vantage point before the season officially begins for us.
Woz texts and he’s on the top deck. That’s a long way up, Paul concedes. And if you know Paul like I do, then you’d know that he doesn’t do anything fast or punctually. I make the official call that we should fuel up from the near-empty Barassi Bar. There are gentle moans about mid-strength beers in plastic cups versus draft in glass. It should be a no brainer but I dig in and minutes later we’re perched on the barrier on the ground level with our kiddy cups next to a strangely deserted bar and enough space around us to swing the 07’ and 09’ premiership cups.

It’s early in the last quarter when I decide to play the reverse psychology card: ‘We’re gone, that’s it.” I say this to my long-time football compatriot, Paul T. It’s all I’ve got left in my hand; the rain is like ice and I’ll know in half an hour whether or not the footy gods care for me in the slightest. I’m exhausted. It’s been the longest two and a half hours of my life and I know that one of the following will be forever etched into the minds of the Australian football follower: either Geelong will become eternally known as the club that brokered the end of the Saints’ drought or finally as a club that would be viewed with the respect it would have had if its seven flags prior to 1896 counted for anything.
